Design and Technology

Design Technology

Design Technology at St Michael and All Angels aims to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to design and make products with a true purpose. They will learn to problem solve and find solutions to issues, and reflect on the outcome of their projects in order to strive for improvement. Pupils will leave our school as resilient problem solvers who can apply their skills to different situations.

Design technology is taught as part of a half-termly or termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum.

In EYFS, the children develop essential basic skills in design technology which prepares them for their transition into Year 1. This is by the teacher creating many opportunities for the children to carry out design technology related activities across all areas on learning.

From Year 1 upwards, the children will engage in a variety of design technology units each year which will involve the children exploring and researching existing products before designing and making their own. They will use technical knowledge and skills, and then evaluate their work. The units that the children complete in each year group have been carefully selected so that all National Curriculum expectations are met by the end of KS1 and KS2 in the key areas of: Design, Make, Evaluate, Technical Knowledge and Cooking & Nutrition.
