Our Links in Tanzania
Update October 2023
Greetings from ACT-SHALOM Primary School.
Its rainy season, though not much but we have begun to plow we believe we will have enough food next season and the children will enjoy. Today about 24 students from ACT-SHALOM are in preparations for the National Examinations which are expected to begin tomorrow. As our friends we ask you to put them in your prayers as good results will allow them to join the fifth grade next year 2024.

The Diocese of Leeds is linked with the Dioceses of Mara, Rorya and Tarime in Tanzania.
There are links between churches, communities and schools and is about:
- Friendship - through visits, letters and emails
- Prayer - we pray for each other often by name
- Practical Support - in whatever way we can
Our Link School - ACT Shalom
Our link school is the Anglican Church School of Shalom. In 2020 Mrs Berry visited Tanzania and our link school.
There are about 22 children in each class and all children greet adults when they visit and ask how they are. The children are always polite. State schools can have 250 in each class so these children are very lucky.
There is a baby class and a nursery class at ACT Shalom. When children are around 6 years old they use numbers 1-9 to do addition and subtraction up to 10 in Maths. They should know how to write their names too. When they start Standard one class they are about 7 years old. When they are 8 years they are using 1000-9000 in Maths.
The school moto is, ‘Shining like stars!'
School day
School starts at 8am and they go home after lunch. The children are doing the Tanzania curriculum but in English. At this school they are allowed to do more creative subjects on a Friday such as art, games and sport. Many schools in Tanzania only do the traditionally academic subjects throughout the week.
School fees
School fees are about 900,000 (about £300) shillings for transport and school fees including dinner and morning porridge.
