French

At St Michael and All Angels Primary School, French provides our children with a wider understanding of the world and different cultures.  Children will be given opportunities to develop their communication skills and confidence in another language.  They will leave our school with a firm foundation for further learning in languages, having developed transferable skills for learning languages.

By the end of year 6, we hope that children are able to demonstrate confidence in reading, listening, speaking and writing in French. They will develop cultural awareness through learning about different aspects of French life such as food, festivals and towns.

KS2 follows the scheme set out by Rachel Hawkes. They have one 30 – 40 minute lesson per week and other opportunities for revisiting throughout the week. The scheme is progressive but builds upon previous learning to allow opportunities for regular revisiting. Songs and rhymes are used to help memory.  We will not fall into the ‘just vocabulary trap’ by ensuring children are regularly applying their vocabulary into a variety of speaking, listening, writing and reading activities as set out in the scheme of work.
