History

Our intent is that the teaching of History at St Michaels will support pupils in gaining a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We aim to develop pupils’ curiosity and encourage them to ask and answer questions in order to find out more about the past. Through the teaching of History, we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.  In order to meet our intent, we follow a carefully designed curriculum which links to the skills from our whole school skills progression. Through the use of our curriculum, skills progression and assessment tools, we are able to ensure that pupils are appropriately challenged and are able to build on their existing knowledge and skills throughout their time at St Michaels and enter their next stage of learning in this area confidently.

The adults in EYFS will provide opportunities for children to talk about the lives of people around them and their roles in society. The children will be supported in knowing some similarities and differences between things in the past and now - drawing on their own experiences and what has been read in class. Throughout their time in EYFS, children will learn to understand the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling.
