Writing and Spelling
Writing
At the heart of our English curriculum is the intent to create a life - long love of reading for all children in our school. We strive to ensure children are enthused about books of all kinds and we understand the importance of this in developing their knowledge of the world around them, embracing diversity and encouraging curiosity.
Our vision for English sets high expectations for all pupils, providing them with many opportunities to speak, read and write across a range of subjects.
Our English lessons are carefully planned to ensure they are imaginative, progressive and meeting the needs of our pupils. We use a text based curriculum to enthuse children in reading high quality texts and subsequently creating a range of engaging writing opportunities. Using a text based unit allows the children to become immersed in their learning with a range of opportunities for reading and writing. This allows deeper learning, enjoyment and excellent writing outcomes. All classes are given opportunities to write across the curriculum, ensuring they have a purpose for writing and develop skills to write both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Spelling
Discrete spelling lessons are taught from year 2 to year 6 using Spelling Shed's spelling scheme. We work hard to ensure spelling lessons are relevant and memorable. We believe in the importance of teaching patterns and rules to enable children to gain a deeper understanding and apply their knowledge to many different spellings, rather than a set of words.
As well as teaching spelling rules, we also regularly practise spelling high frequency words (words that are most commonly read/written).
Below are some resources to help you support your child’s spelling at home. The Spelling Shed website is intended as weekly homework to support your child's spelling. Here you will find weekly spelling lists and also high frequency/common words set by your child's class teacher.
